It's time to design the winning entry for Animation Magazine's PITCH PARTY!

The blog will be open to everyone for now so you can read the rules, take note of the deadline and see last year's blog (pitchparty2010.blogspot.com).

Take a look at past designs and winners. Figure out what wins before you start your design:

1. A great idea. Think of your target audience.
2. Strong, appealing design (your area of specialization, for sure!) and good composition/colour design.
3. A catchy title/description (not too wordy).

This is what you need to send me before the deadline:
a) An image, EXACTLY 2.25 inches wide by 4.875 inches high (If you're using TV Paint, the equivalent is 1350 pixels wide by 2925 pixels high).
b) Up to 30 words (part of the artwork) to pitch the idea or character
c) The title of your Pitch (optional on artwork)
d) Contact information (email address and maybe your blog address if you've got a killer blog that you want people to visit)

e) Email me your name, title of pitch, email address and phone number that I will forward with the artwork.

This is a great opportunity. Let me know if you're in or not!

PACIFIC CINÉMATHÈQUE'S CINEMA SUNDAY presents

Max & Dave Fleischer's MR. BUG GOES TO TOWN (1941)

The Pacific Cinémathèque Education Department presents a rare screening of Max and Dave Fleischer’s 1941 classic animated feature, MR. BUG GOES TO TOWN, on Sunday 16 January 2011 at 1:00 PM. This is a very special occasion to experience one of the classic animated films from the Golden Age of Hollywood animation with a restored 35mm print – direct from the vaults of Paramount Pictures – projected on a big screen, as this movie was meant to be seen! Vancouver film history teacher and film critic, Michael van den Bos, will be introducing this second and last animated feature by Max and Dave Fleischer (their first animated feature was 1939’s GULLIVER’S TRAVELS), famous for bringing the cartoons of Betty Boop, Popeye the Sailor and Superman to the silver screen in the 1930s and 1940s. This special screening of MR. BUG GOES TO TOWN is for the whole family, so bring your kids along and introduce them to the wonder of some of the finest hand-drawn animation ever created for the movies.

So many assignments were bombarding us this week, and a lot of us were worried we wouldn't have anything decent to show Florian for the Goofy rough pass. It was expected to be a long and stressful night.

But then,

If you are reading this Florian, I will say that we all love and appreciate that you take time out of your busy schedule to teach us - VERY MUCH SO!! ...but we also loooooohohohove the extra hours of sleep.

I mean, if we didn't work so hard through nights and early mornings on your assignments we wouldn't be like this would we?

Classroom Seating - 2010

As you were told last year, the seating in 2nd year is NOT first-come, first-served. In order to avoid arguments and Justin Bieber-type concert line ups the night before the first day, seating is randomly selected for you (names out of a hat, paired with a number out of another hat). The image here is the layout for this term. You will be given a number on the first day and that will relate to this map. #1 is the instructor's station.

Feel free to swap places with others through friendly negotiation and move when both parties agree to the move. No bullying or threats please!

First day: Move in Tuesday morning. Moh has Life Drawing set up for you on Tuesday afternoon. Room SA 104 (AR 301 is the back up room in case there is an orientation conflict with Studio Art)

chronicle the legacy of a local animation studio that has become a leader in kids’
entertainment. Studio B’s popular animated series include Kid vs Kat, Martha

This evening will relate the studio’s rapid development from a two-man operation
into its current status as a world-renowned production house composed of more
than 200 artists and staff.

Since 2006, Studio B has been donating its records from 12 original productions
and many examples of its service and other work to the City Archives, preserving
these records for generations to come.

3. Note: I have a tripod and I believe A/V in the Library has them as well.
4. Your request will be confirmed by email. Check the schedule for notes on when to pick up/hand back the equipment.

Please take care of the equipment. You are responsible for it.

Do not remove SD card until you turn the power off (on/off switch located on left side of camera body)
SD card can be inserted in card readers in LB 319 computers. Move files to hard drive or external drive (NOT on Tsunami or Digital servers please!) for editing. Back up files so you don't need to reshoot...that would be a pain.

NOTE: When shooting is complete, transfer your data from the SD card to a hard drive, back it up, and then ERASE THE DATA FROM THE SD CARD before giving the camera to another student.

If you get a camera with files on the SD card that have not been deleted, you have my permission to delete the files yourself before you begin shooting your film.

You guys should consider volunteering for this (in L.A.) this summer. They are said to be very good to their volunteers and it's a great networking job.

SIGGRAPH 2011 will be in Vancouver and you'll have just graduated. I would think that volunteers at 2010 would get dibs on great positions for Vancouver (which has never hosted and will be in real need of experienced people!

And it will be cheaper than Annecy.

Getting the most out of Firefox

So I may have told a few people and I don't know if everyone already knows about this or not, but one way I really like staying connected and inspired by whats going on in the animation world is by keeping it all organized in my .rss reader, which basically checks my chosen blogs on a daily basis. This way I can come home and see what's new without having to constantly re-check favorite blogs to see if they've updated.

I'm not sure what's currently out there for Windows, but one program I really like for Mac is Newsfire, which integrates really well with Firefox. It's also well designed and free. Any blog like this one is going to have an .rss feed- even places like Flickr and Deviantart have them. By clicking on the little

in the address window, you'll see the .rss feed for the page you're on.

Once you're taken to that page Firefox will ask which program you'd like to add the feed to. When you choose Newsfire, Newfire will pop up ready to add that blog link. Super simple, it's a great way to stay inspired and connected to the industry's happenings.

Alright guys i know i've already mentioned this to most of you but the other day marco and(I, Me, Myself) were talkin to Don about the annecy film festival and thought that it would be CRAZY if we actually planned it out to go. Now some people might be thinking pffff no way we would be able to get that organized...well ya, not with that attitude! thats why im posting this up now so that we have a chance. For those of you who don't know about the Annecy Film Festival its pretty much the biggest animation film festival in the world and its in Annecy, France. I believe its during the second week of june for 5 days and i figure we could plan a trip to be there for about a week. Of course we wouldnt be able to go to the 2010 but if we put in the effort and really try to get it organized we should be able to go in 2011, after grad(What better way to celebrate our graduation). Now we should probably try to have some sort of meeting to talk more about this....I was thinking maybe this weekend sometime...unless everyone prefers to do it after school. Of course money is the main issue here so we'd probably have to do a bunch of fundraisers and stuff...one idea from rachel was to make a comic book and sell them...so if you have any other ideas to raise money bring them to the meeting! Anyways right now im just interested in seeing who wants to go and who will devote the time and effort to make this happen. I dont want people who say "Ya this sounds great I'm in!" and then sits back and watches everyone else put their heart and soul into making this happen...those people will be punished severly! just kiddin, but not really. Anyways comment and let me know when you would want to meet.

A good amount of us said Friday is good for our Sushi/Thanksgiving get together, and nearly everyone I talked to said Shibusen (sp?) is a agood pick sooooooo that's the plan! SWEET ADELINE (1926) - "Song Cartune (Bouncing Ball)" series - directed by Dick Huemer.

BIMBO'S INITIATION (1931) - "Talkartoon" series - starring Bimbo with guest appearance by the canine version of Betty Boop.

SNOW-WHITE (1933) - "Betty Boop" series - starring Betty Boop, Bimbo, and KoKo; St. James Infirmary Blues sung by Cab Calloway.

Amy and I were discussing the cute-going-out-for-sushi plan again yesterday, let's do it:) Would you guys want to go one week night after class or is the weekend easier for everyone? Suggestions on where to dine are also up for discussion - so far we've got the Eatery in Kits... There are about 3 bajillion sushi joints in Van so I'm sure we can figure out a spot. Just say the word!

Hey guys!

This is Jenny. I found a nice, fairly decent, beige, and clean couch on Craig's List Vancouver. It's free, and I'm not sure if they're willing to give it to us, or even deliver it for us, but if all goes well, and we can get it, I'm sure we can figure out a way to get it to our class. That is, if you guys would like a couch in the room, and if Don says we can. I just sent them an e-mail and am waiting for a response.

Please come to Orientation activities for first year students! You should have received your invitation from the University (check your Capilano email).

There is no actual class for first years on Tuesday but you can go to LB 316 and move in! Find a workstation that's unoccupied and set up camp. Your first class is on Wednesday @ 1pm in that room. No need to bring supplies.

Welcome to the Commercial Animation Program!

Hi and thanks for deciding to make Capilano your home for the next two years.

Commercial Animation is a program designed to prepare you for a successful career in animation. This blog is a way for you to interact outside of class with the rest of the group. You can use it to show off your work, get feedback, ask questions (and get answers), announce important events, etc.

Take a look at the previous class blogs to get an idea of how it works. After you graduate, the blog can be used to stay in touch with the rest of the class. Everyone who registers in the program this year will receive an invitation to participate in this blog.

Please remember that it is a public blog, so don't post private information and consider what you're uploading before you publish.

The email that you will need to use is this one:
your name@cms.capilanou.ca email address (the one you received when you applied to Capilano). Also, you should check that email often, or go into the Cap Webmail options to forward any mail that goes to capilanou.ca to another mail system you use (like gmail or hotmail)....something you check regularly. Otherwise you may miss important information.

I'll be posting things from time to time: books list, suggestions, events, etc.

Enjoy the summer and I'll see you in September.
